CASE Press Release (Word doc.)
The BBC will broadcast the first episode of this adaptation of the events of Holy Week on BBC One on Palm Sunday, 16th March. The final episode will be shown on Easter Sunday, 23rd March.
All four of the broadcasts will be during peak time viewing.
The series is described as an attempt to understand and retell the
events of the last days of Jesus’ life as they are
recorded in the Gospels. The story is told from three
points of view: the religious authorities; the Romans;
and Jesus and his disciples. All the key players are
intimately characterised, with Jesus at the centre.
Episode one starts with Jesus’ prophetic entrance
through the East Gate of Jerusalem. It follows him to
his crucifixion. The last episode deals in
detail with Jesus’ resurrection appearances and their
impact on the disciples. Like the first disciples, viewers
will be left trying to understand what has happened,
and what it might mean.
There was no “religious” motive in producing this series.
We are told that the BBC were simply looking for a great story to tell
in episodic drama.
Although some aspects of this drama adaptation will not correspond with Catholic teaching, this broadcast presents itself as an evangelisation opportunity since many people will be talking about Jesus and 'The Passion' story who would not otherwise be doing so. To that end, CASE has collated below a range of resources to equip and enable you to reach out to people. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you require further information or materials. Some of the resources below have been kindly provided by our ecumenical partners.
